Postcards from Madrid: Guernica
I have been looking for a Picasso painting for a client so I could not be in Madrid without paying a visit to Picasso's epic 1937 masterpiece, ”Guernica.”
The photos of it in process were taken by the incredible Surrealist photographer Dora Maar whose contribution to the work (and to the larger Surrealist movement) is often vastly understated. For example, Picasso was said to have rendered the work in greyscale because he was influenced by her black and white photographs. He’s also known to have looked at Maar’s photos of the unfinished painting during its creation and made adjustments to the painting from those images afterwards.
